Historic Information to be presented on Girard's Downtown Buildings

For the past twenty years, the Friends of Historic Girard have been working to “discover and memorialize the history of the town of Girard” and to “preserve physical objects that may relate to the history of the region.” In 2006, the Friends hired Davis Preservation to prepare a national register nomination for the Raymond Community Home. The Raymond Home project kicked off a formal effort by the Friends to identify, designate and preserve the city’s significant historic buildings.
Historic Information will be shared concerning Girard’s downtown buildings/businesses and on four properties that are being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. Friends of Historic Girard received a National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund grant funded in part by the U.S. Department of the Interior and administered by the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office and Friends. Christy Davis with Davis Preservation was hired as the consultant and has worked closely with Friends to complete the surveys and nominations. Davis surveyed a total of sixty-nine buildings and will present the information at a meeting Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Girard Public Library at 6:30 pm.
Terri Harley, President of Friends of Historic Girard is very excited about the information that will be presented and encourages members of the community and surrounding area to attend. Friends of Historic Girard sought the grant as a first step in preserving the downtown buildings and helping businesses in rehabilitation projects that would allow their building to be used as a viable and contributing business. There will be a time for questions and answers and refreshments will be served.
