Memorial Day History

Memorial Day, initially called Decoration Day, got its start on May 30, 1868, when Union /General John A. Logan pronounced the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Eventually the name was changed to Memorial Day. President Richard Nixon declared it a federal holiday in 1971, and Memorial Day is now recognized on the last Monday of May. Over time it has grown into an occasion to honor men and women who died in all wars.

It is common to observe Memorial Day by visiting graveyards and war monuments. Countless people also mark this holiday by attending parades.

However you decide to celebrate this important day, be sure to keep in mind the men and women who fought for our great country.
