Teen Advisory Group News
The Girard Public Library Teen Advisory Group (T.A.G.) & Young Adult Librarian Angela Swift, held the 2007 Spring Lock-In for 20 teens on Friday March 23rd. This Lock-In was sponsored/funded by the teens from their previous fundraisers at the beginning of the year. This lock-in’s activities use almost the entire facility of the Girard Public Library. The teens were to check in promptly at 8:30 p.m. for the activities to start at 9:00 p.m. Each of the 20 participants were accompanied by three staff members; Angela Swift T.A.G. Advisor/YA Librarian for Girard Public Library, Trisha Geier RN from Girard, and Kristi Potter Para teacher from Pittsburg. The teens range in age from 11-18 grades 6-12.
The nights’ activities were based around the concept & theme of “Learning About Technology”. The teachings of the night dealt with the safety on the Internet, basic computer knowledge, and people, personalities, and who use the Internet. The entire night, the teens earned and accumulated “learning Bucks” to be applied to a Learning Bucks Auction which ended the night off. Each activity throughout the evening they earned bucks for answering questions correctly, participating, listening, and joining in on activities. They also earned plenty of extra bucks from doing simple tasks such as, asking to go to the restroom, remembering names of staff members and other participants, being seated and quiet while staff is talking, cleaning up their messes, and using manners. The activities included mystery games about Internet safety in chatting, computer part scavenger hunt, a movie “The Net”, Computer/Internet Jeopardy, & Question & Answer sessions after each event. We had snacks all night long, pizza feast, and breakfast in the morning. The Learning Bucks they earned were used in the auction to bid on such prizes as DVD’s, CD-R’s, T-shirts, Books, Grab bags, & Stationary sets. This way all participants won at least one prize each! After cleanup from all of the participants, they were ready to go home at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. It was a great night of fun, and a learning experience for all!
