As we come into the year 2010, times are tough and everyone is feeling the impact of the current economy. Government and businesses are forced to tighten their belts, nonprofits and social service agencies are facing funding cuts, and members of our community are worried about their jobs and paying the mortgage. There is a lot of gloom and doom out there, but your library can help. Libraries have become recognized as one of the most useful community resources. The library offers computers with free high-speed Internet. They are used for e-mail, filing of taxes and unemployment forms, to map trips, take exams, fill out college admission forms, type resumes and to search for jobs. The youth visit chat rooms, do homework, play games and use the email.
Books, DVD’s, CD’s, book on tape and CD’s along with Play-a-Ways and magazines are available for checkout. The Morning Sun and Joplin Globe are available each day for our patrons to read. According to a recent study, a family of four saves as much as $2,500 a year by borrowing 10 items per month instead of buying.
Check our website and newsletter for the dates of all of our children and youth meetings. Our card catalog is available at our website, look for items or renew your books online. Remember if we don’t have what you need, we will interlibrary loan it for you. It only takes a couple of days and there is no cost for this service.
Make plans this year to use the library even more... and tell or better yet bring a friend.
