Girard Public Library Receives Pritchett Trust Grant

Terri Harley, Director of the Girard Public Library joined fifty-one organizations that gathered at the Gold Bank in Pittsburg March 16th to receive a check in the amount of $3,500 from the Pritchett Trust. Gold Bank President Tad Dunham and Gold Trust Company Officer Ken Webb presented $430,946 in grants to the recipients. The grants are to go to community projects that benefit children, youth and families.

Nearly 100 applications were received and the Gold Bank Advisory Board members worked together to select the organizations and projects and determine the amount each would receive.
The funds received from the Pritchett grant are important to the Girard Public Library, helping to provide for our youngest patrons, the children and youth. The additional funds will allow the library to purchase the missing books in several of our series for both the children and young adult departments. It will provide games and puzzles for after school and special library sponsored events and programs. The library will also purchase a laptop that will be utilized for movie nights, Internet cafes, game nights and computer classes.

The children and youth of our community utilize the library for a lot of their after school hours and parents feel it is a safe and caring environment in which to have their children spend time. We currently have 512 children and 485 young adults who have library cards. We also have many kids who use the library daily who do not have cards, but spend much of their time here. Library staff work diligently to provide quality books, programs and activities, some of which fall out side of our budgeted amounts. The banks and businesses of Girard help with donations toward some of our programs and the young adults have taken to the streets to raise funds for the activities that they desire to hold. The young adult group has more than doubled this year with the kids seeing the importance of having a good library that provides more than just books.

Providing for the children and young adults, allows parents and grandparents to see the importance of supporting the future of the library. Our desire is to provide a safe, comfortable and functional environment that will meet all age demands for materials and programming
