Girard Public Library 2005 Annual Report
The library is open 46 hours per week and is staffed on two levels. The total square feet of the building is 12,600. There was a full time equivalency of staff totaling 5.8 persons. With volunteer hours of 587. The library has a total of 23 computers, 11 of which are public access and 4 that are used for card catalogs. The weekly average for computer use is 172 for a total annual use of 8,944 persons. The library web site (girardpubliclibrary.net) provides library and community information and access to our online card catalog.
The library held 22 children’s programs with a total attendance 1,353 children, there were also 2 adult programs with a attendance of 53. The Southeast Kansas System held 3 workshops at the library The 3 public meeting rooms were scheduled with over 150 meetings and over 2,300 people attending.
Weekly visits of 1,297 bring an annual total of 67,444 people per year. The library owns 25,536 books, 1,672 audio materials, 2,240 video materials, 104 periodical subscriptions and own 70 computer educational games, there are also 155 books with tapes for children. For a total 29,777 holdings.
Circulation for the year of 2005 totaled 43,325 items. Adult/Young adult materials were 30,445 and children's materials 12,880. There were 702 books checked out through rotation, 374 items borrowed for our patrons and 689 items loaned to other libraries.
The Young Adult’s group TAG (Teen Advisory Group) met regularly and held 2 successful fund raisers. They currently have $549.42 in their account and used the funds to host 2 lockins and 1 mystery night for any teen that met the requirements to attend. They brought in the awesome program “Cross Swords” for summer reading and also funded Teen Read Week activities and coffee houses held on half days of school. With a total attendance of 496 youth. The library also received a grant for $1,800 in which new furniture was purchased along with paint and paper for the teen area.
The Friends of the Girard Public Library meet every other month and have set several goals for the future. In 2005 they purchased a piano and cover and had it tuned. The members helped with the book sale and with the flowers beds and shrubs. They also hosted a program of historical interest for the community. We are pleased to offer home bound services and take books to Westridge every 6 weeks. The library currently offers tax forms and free tax service to seniors provided by AARP volunteers every Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm.
