Library Receives Grant

The Girard Public Library has been awarded a Collection Development Grant from the Southeast Kansas Library System in the amount of $1,200.00. The grant will be split and $600 will be used by Joy McGhee, Children’s Librarian, and $600 will be used by Naamah Harley, Young Adult Librarian. New books on CD will be purchased for each department. In the Children’s Library it had become apparent to Joy that our selection of audio books and read along packets was becoming out of date. Joy has already begun selection of new titles and we should be adding them to our shelves after the fist of the year. If there are any titles that you would like to see added please let her know.

In the Young Adult department Naamah has seen a rise in the use of the library with middle school and high school students. With this rise has come a realization that our current materials aren’t meeting young adult needs. Our audio books section is an area where this need for new materials has become apparent and books on CD are popular and often requested. We currently house around 15 Young Adult audio books most of those belonging to a single series. We are asked weekly about what other series and books we will be receiving for this age group. Increasing the Young Adult audio book section, will increase the number of people that we will serve and save our patrons money and time by having these materials in house. We have received positive feed back on the titles we do have and Teachers have stated that the use of audio books has helped students with reading levels. They have also observed that students are more eager to read when they are not stumbling over text, and having an audio book at their side aids with this problem.

I am please to say that this grant will help to improve the quality of services for not only the youth, but for their parents and teachers.
